The sources said the institute opened five new research centers last year, focusing on core technologies such as photovoltaics, display technology, medical electronics and devices, radio frequency identification and system-on-a-chip technology. As a result, the ITRI was recuiting not only at home, but also in the US, he said.
The institute is also offering internships to 40 young Taiwanese in the US, in the hope that these individuals will return home after finishing their studies, the sources added.
The ITRI, founded in 1973 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, has 6,000 researchers and other staff -- 900 of whom have doctoral degrees and 3,000 of whom have master's degrees.
