The trade in agricultural products saw a deficit of US$4.93 billion in the first 10 months of this year, compared with US$4.47 billion in the same period last year, according to tallies released yesterday by the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics.
The trade volume in agricultural products amounted to US$10.73 billion from January to October, up 3.5 percent from the same time last year.
While exports declined 1.6 percent year-on-year to US$2.9 billion, imports increased 5.6 percent year-on-year to US$7.83 billion.
The majority of the exports were aquacultural products and livestock, which amounted to US$2.18 billion and accounted for 75 percent of all exports.
The majority of the imports were crops, which amounted to US$4.64 billion, followed by livestock, which amounted to US$1.61 billion. These two items together accounted for 80 percent of all imports.
The main export destinations of Taiwan's agricultural products are Japan and the US, but exports to these two countries slid 10.9 percent in the first 10 months of this year compared with the same time last year.
