    CEPD reviews airport plan

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Monday, Aug 22, 2005, Page 10

The Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) will discuss expanding Taichung County's Chingchuankang Airport today in the hope of making the airport suitable for international flights.

The airport was opened in March of last year to become the nation's third international airport. At the time, Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) Director-General Billy Chang (張國政) said at the time said that Chingchuankang would not be able to accommodate scheduled international flights until 2008 at the earliest.

The first-phase expansion project, carrying a price tag of NT$1.55 billion (US$48.5 million), is slated for completion in 2008, according to CAA plans.

Both Vice Premier Wu Rong-i (吳榮義) and CEPD Vice Chairman Chang Ching-sen (張景森), after making inspection tours of the airport earlier this summer, are supportive of the expansion plan.

To meet the growing demand for outbound charter flights from the greater Taichung area, the first-phase expansion includes constructing more waiting rooms and installing large X-ray inspection facilities.

Taiwanese made a total of 7.78 million visits abroad last year, 18.7 percent of which were made by residents from the central region of the country, according to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
