Ericsson and local partners launch mobile IP camera

By Jackie Lin  /  STAFF REPORTER

Leading Swedish telecommunication manufacturer Ericsson Taiwan Ltd and its three local partners yesterday unveiled the world's first mobile Internet protocol (IP) camera with one megapixel resolution to tap into the growing personal security market.

The product, called Pocket View, is a Web camera with wireless transmission capability that supports all mobile phones that adopt the third-generation (3G) standard image format.

With the support of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' industrial technology department, the Ericsson Innovation Center, established in 2003 in Taiwan, integrated Aiptek International Inc's (天瀚科技) strength in digital video and wireless communication, Everelite Technology Co's (艾群科技) solutions for integrating large data centers, and Sunplus Technology Co's (凌陽科技) image and video compression technology to develop the gadget.

The product is set to hit the market next month with a retail price of under NT$10,000 (US$312), said Sean Gowran, president of Ericsson Taiwan, at a press conference yesterday. The exact price will be decided by final retailers, he said.

In a recent consumer survey in Taiwan, Ericsson found that users most want mobile surveillance to monitor home and garage security, as well as to check pets and children.
