Shares fell yesterday, hurt by a drop in technology heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), which gave a worse-than-expected outlook for product prices in the third quarter, dealers said.
The downside, however, was limited by select interest in the banks after Chang Hwa Commercial Bank (彰化銀行) attracted a significantly higher-than-expected bid for its share offer, they said.
The TAIEX closed down 38.91 points, or 0.6 percent, at 6,327.25. Decliners outnumbered advancers 581 to 272 with 128 stocks unchanged.
TSMC fell by 4.5 percent to NT$53.10. Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技) lost 4.69 percent to NT$23.35 after reporting a moderate loss for the second quarter to last month due to weaker chip prices. Handset makers Compal Communications Inc (華寶通訊) and High Tech Computer Corp (宏達電子) rose on hopes of increased shipments.
