Profit-taking drags down main bourse

AP AND BLOOMBERG , TAIPEI

Shares ended moderately lower yesterday after a weak performance by US stocks overnight and on profit-taking after gains in the previous session, analysts said.

The TAIEX finished 24.20 points, or 0.41 percent, lower at 5,818.07 in light of trading valued at NT$48.9 billion (US$1.56 billion).

Decliners outnumbered advancers 593 to 248, while 172 issues ended the day unchanged.

Some traders were also taking profits after the TAIEX rose 1.1 percent on Thursday, traders said.

Technology shares were among the worst performing stocks, falling 0.8 percent overall.

Siliconware Precision Industries Co (矽品), a chip-testing and packaging service provider, fell 4.4 percent to NT$27.10 after the company said late Thursday its net profit for the first quarter fell 14 percent to NT$1.2 billion.

Turnover shrank yesterday partly because investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of several large companies' first-quarter earnings reports, analysts said.

On the foreign exchange market, the New Taiwan dollar rose against its US counterpart after a newspaper said China may let the yuan trade more freely at any time.
