The nation's energy consumption fell 1.3 percent from a year earlier in February as industrial output slowed during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Taiwan burned the equivalent of 7.91 million kiloliters (49.8 million barrels) of oil in February, with industrial companies including manufacturers and construction companies accounting for 59 percent of that consumption, the Bureau of Energy said on its Web site yesterday.
Industrial production in Taiwan, Asia's sixth-largest economy, fell 13 percent in February from a year ago, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on March 23. There were 15 working days in February this year, compared with 20 a year earlier, as the Lunar New Year holiday began on Feb. 7 compared with Jan. 21 last year.
The nation used 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in February, 1.3 percent less than the same month last year, the bureau said.
Taiwan bought 98 percent of its energy needs overseas, the bureau said. The country imported 5.23 million kiloliters of crude oil in February, down 3.1 percent from a year earlier.
The country imported 476 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in February, up 0.7 percent, the bureau said.
