Australian Commerce and Industry Office Representative Frances Adamson visited to Kaohsiung County Commissioner Yang Chiu-hsiung (·¨¬î¿³) yesterday as part of efforts to further boost bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
Adamson told Yang that Taiwan is Australia's ninth-largest trading partner and that there is still ample room for the two countries to expand their cooperation.
Adamson briefed Yang on the highlights of a Taiwan-Australian working holiday visa agreement to be implemented on Nov. 1.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two countries will issue working holiday visas to each other's young citizens to boost tourist exchanges and understanding.
Many Taiwanese make sightseeing trips to Australia each year and the number of Taiwanese students study in Australia has also increased steadily, Adamson said. He said that last year alone, Tai-wanese made 190,000 visits to Australia and the number of Taiwanese studying in Australia has already reached 10,000.
"We hope the working holiday visa agreement will further facilitate student exchanges between our two countries, " Adamson said.
For his part, Yang said Australians are welcome to visit Kao-hsiung County, either for sightseeing or investment.
Yang noted that he has traveled to the US, Europe, Russia and Scandinavian countries in the past few years to woo investment in Kaohsiung.
Yang said Kaohsiung is been one of Taiwan's most important agricultural and manufacturing bases.
Yang said the county government has also adopted many measures to attract foreign investors to its new environmental protection industry park and telecommunication industry park.
"We welcome Australian business groups to invest in these two new industrial parks," Yang said.
