TAIEX lower as recovery worries spur profit-taking

AP , TAIPEI

Shares ended slightly lower yesterday as investors took profits on morning gains on concerns over the strength of the global economic recovery, analysts said.

The TAIEX finished down 9.52 points, or 0.2 percent, at 5,342.49 in dealings valued at NT$35.67 billion (US$1.04 billion).

The value of trading yesterday was only a slight increase from the volume of NT$27.33 billion traded in the previous session.

"The bourse opened higher but took a dive on profit-taking. People's confidence in the market is still shaky," said Harvey Chang, a United Securities Investment Trust (聯合投信) analyst.

Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體), the nation's largest memory chip maker, dropped 1 percent to NT$19.8 after the spot price of the benchmark dynamic random access memory chip (DRAM) dropped 0.5 percent to US$4.15 yesterday, according to DRAMexchange, an online clearinghouse for memory chips.

The flat-panel industry was also mixed. AU Optronics Corp (友達光電), the world's third-largest maker of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used in laptops and televisions, gained 0.5 percent to NT$37.8, but Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp (奇美電子) fell 0.8 percent to NT$39.4.

Chang said the LCD sector's oversupply problem has been compounded by an overestimation of back-to-school demand for personal computers.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, advanced 0.9 percent to NT$43.8 on a 1.6 percent gain in its American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) overnight. Rival United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) rose 0.5 percent to NT$21.7 after a 0.9 percent rise in its ADRs.
