Shares ended slightly lower yesterday as investors took profits on morning gains on concerns over the strength of the global economic recovery, analysts said.
The TAIEX finished down 9.52 points, or 0.2 percent, at 5,342.49 in dealings valued at NT$35.67 billion (US$1.04 billion).
The value of trading yesterday was only a slight increase from the volume of NT$27.33 billion traded in the previous session.
"The bourse opened higher but took a dive on profit-taking. People's confidence in the market is still shaky," said Harvey Chang, a United Securities Investment Trust (
Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體), the nation's largest memory chip maker, dropped 1 percent to NT$19.8 after the spot price of the benchmark dynamic random access memory chip (DRAM) dropped 0.5 percent to US$4.15 yesterday, according to DRAMexchange, an online clearinghouse for memory chips.
The flat-panel industry was also mixed. AU Optronics Corp (
Chang said the LCD sector's oversupply problem has been compounded by an overestimation of back-to-school demand for personal computers.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, advanced 0.9 percent to NT$43.8 on a 1.6 percent gain in its American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) overnight. Rival United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) rose 0.5 percent to NT$21.7 after a 0.9 percent rise in its ADRs.
