Acer Inc, Taiwan's third-largest personal computer company by market value, said its fourth-quarter shipments of notebook PCs nearly doubled to a record 970,000 units.
The gain in shipments was strongest in Europe, where growth more than doubled, the company said in a release. Acer said that in the third quarter last year it became the world's fifth-largest seller of laptops and the second largest in Western Europe.
"Acer should maintain its momentum in Europe this year," said Stephen Tseng (
The company has benefited from Hewlett-Packard Co's change in marketing strategy to emulate Dell Inc, Tseng said. HP's efforts to sell directly to buyers has threatened retailers, which have dropped HP in favor of Acer, he said.
