Premier Yu Shyi-kun will meet with six business heavyweights tomorrow at a seminar designed as a warm-up to a four-day business investment conference later this month.
The 2003 Taiwan Business Alliance Conference is to be held at the Taipei International Convention Center from Oct. 19. With more than 1,000 business leaders expected to attend, the event is designed to woo more technical cooperation and fresh capital from foreign investors, Ministry of Economic Affairs officials said.
Participating in the seminar tomorrow will be Leslie Lok, president of Siemens Ltd Taiwan; Walt Cheng (
Trade officials said the purpose of the seminar is to explore the present situation in Taiwan's high-tech industry, traditional industry, financial and service sectors, with special focus on how to attract more foreign investment.
Foreign investment in Taiwan has consistently fallen in the past few years: from US$7.6 billion in 2000, to US$5.13 billion in 2001, and to US$3.27 billion last year, according to ministry statistics.
The officials said that they hope to demonstrate Taiwan's confidence in developing its economy through in-depth talks between the premier and the six business leaders.

The seminar, sponsored by the ministry's Industrial Development and Investment Center and the China External Trade Development Council (外貿協會), will be held at 2:30pm at the Taipei International Convention Center.
