The Internet network of the Bureau of Monetary Affairs was probably broken into by hackers, according to local media reports yesterday.
The bureau received reports that the e-mail network that transmits confidential data between the bureau and financial institutions had been attacked by hackers.
The bureau confirmed they had been broken into, though it provided no futher details about how much damage was sustained. An investigation has been launched to look into whether important confidential information was taken as a result of the intrusion.
The bureau's network is divided into three major domains: an Internet search service for the public, a transmission system for financial institutions to declare their business operational data and the bureau's intranet. If the data transmission domain was broken into by hackers, confidential bank operational data may have been compromised. The hackers could have possibly gained access to the networks of financial institutions and used the data to undermine financial stability.
According to an unidentified official at the bureau, the data transmission domain was not likely to be broken into since it is protected by two firewalls.
