Acer Group to give away 1 million IAs

STAFF WRITER

Acer Group plans to give away one million Internet appliances (IA, 資訊家電) to stock market investors beginning in July, local media reported yesterday.

In an attempt to grab a big share of Taiwan's Internet financial services market, Acer Group plans to spend NT$4 billion giving away the Web-enabled devices.

Acer's first offering is a wireless mobile "manager," (理財機) a set-top box. Users will be able to access information on stocks, banking and investment trusts through Acer's Web site -- money.121.com -- using the devices.

In addition, Acer later plans to give away WAP-compliant "Smart Phones" and Web Pads.

Several companies within the Acer Group are working on the project. Acer Inc and Acer Peripherals Inc will take the lead on the manufacturing side of the initiative.

Rednet Group (宏網), an Internet enterprise, will run money121.com. The site offers financial management information such as investment tips, stock market analysis and online financial services to stock investors and bank customers.

According to a Rednet Group executive, Acer plans to make back its investment through user fees, online advertisements and commissions generated from financial transactions.

Roughly 6.5 million people have stock market accounts in Taiwan. The Internet-based financial services market is estimated to worth NT$10 billion annually.
