The Central Weather Administration (CWA) today issued heavy or extremely heavy rain advisories for seven cities and counties in southern Taiwan, warning that a low-pressure system could bring localized heavy rain and sudden downpours.
The CWA warned that Kaohsiung and Pingtung County could experience extremely heavy rain, while Tainan and Chiayi cities and Yunlin, Chiayi and Taitung counties could see heavy rain.

All seven areas were expected to see lightning and strong gusts, while low-lying areas were vulnerable to flooding and mountainous areas could face landslides, falling rocks and sudden river surges, the CWA said.

An extremely heavy rain warning indicates accumulated rainfall of more than 200mm in 24 hours or 100mm within three hours, while a heavy rain alert means accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm in 24 hours or 40mm in one hour.
Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said Taiwan was likely to experience unstable weather through Saturday as strengthening southwesterly winds could trigger severe weather.
Meanwhile, the CWA this morning issued back-to-back notices regarding the formation of tropical storms Saudel and Krovanh.
Saudel is currently in the waters east of China's Hainan Island and is to move in a northeasterly direction, with its potential impact on Taiwan yet to be observed, the CWA said.
It reconstituted back into a tropical storm at 8am today after moving across southern China, the agency said.
Krovanh, which also formed at about 8am, is in the waters southeast of Japan's Ryukyu Islands and would have no direct impact on Taiwan, it added.

A sea warning for Typhoon Saudel, which has shifted to a more northerly track as it nears Taiwan, is expected early tomorrow, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today. As of this morning, Saudel was about 650km east-northeast of Taipei, moving west-northwest at 12kph with maximum sustained winds of 162kph, CWA data showed.
