The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) today lodged a protest after the head of the Commercial Office of Brazil to Taipei said in an interview that Taiwan is a part of China.
Office Director Luís Cláudio Villafañe Gomes Santos in an interview with online news outlet Up Media published yesterday said that Taiwan is a part of China and that Brazil does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country.
The ministry said it was highly dissatisfied with the envoy's "false and inappropriate" remarks, adding that it had already conveyed its strict protest and concern to Santos.

Under international law, diplomatic representatives have an obligation to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of their host nation, it said.
During the interview, Santos said that Taiwan is a part of China and that Brazil, like the majority of nations, does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country.
He further said that even the chair of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) within Taiwan holds the same view.
MOFA told reporters that it had formally protested the remarks directly to Santos earlier this morning.
The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation that is not subordinate to the People's Republic of China, the ministry said.
This is a universally recognized fact and an objective reality, MOFA said, adding that it strongly condemns Santos' false and inappropriate comments.

China has reserved offshore airspace over the Yellow Sea and East China Sea from March 27 to May 6, issuing alerts that are usually used to warn of military exercises, although no such exercises have been announced, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Sunday.
