A new wave of cold air is on Thursday expected to move in from the north and could strengthen into a continental cold air mass affecting Taiwan through Saturday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today.
From Thursday to Saturday, the cold air system would create cold and wet weather conditions in areas north of central Taiwan and along the northeast coast, while other regions would also feel cooler at night and in the early morning, the weather agency said.
The CWA defines a continental cold air mass as conditions in which temperatures at the Taipei weather station fall to 14°C or below.

During the period, northern Taiwan is likely to experience cold and damp conditions, while central and southern Taiwan would be mostly cloudy, with occasional light rain in mountainous areas, the agency said.
On Thursday and Friday, lows of 13°C to 15°C are expected in the north and Yilan, and 15°C to 17°C in the south and in Hualien and Taitung counties, the CWA said.
Today, weakening northeasterly winds would cause temperatures to rebound across Taiwan under mostly cloudy to sunny skies, it said.
Eastern Taiwan, the northern coast and the Hengchun Peninsula might have brief showers, while daytime highs in central and southern Taiwan could reach 27°C to 28°C, compared with 24°C to 26°C in the north and east, the CWA said.
Lows of 15°C to 17°C are forecast for northern Taiwan and Yilan in the northeast, and 18°C to 20°C in southern Taiwan and in Hualien and Taitung in the east, it said.
Seasonal winds would strengthen slightly tomorrow, lowering temperatures in the north and northeast and increasing moisture, the agency said.
The latest model simulations suggest the cold air mass later this week could be slightly stronger than previously expected, with minimum temperatures in low-lying areas potentially dropping to about 10°C, independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said.
From Thursday to Saturday, the zero-degree line, or snow line, could descend to about 3,000 meters, and with sufficient moisture there could be isolated snowfall on tall mountains such as Hehuanshan (合歡山), Xueshan (雪山) and Nanhu Mountain (南湖山).
Conditions are on Sunday expected to become drier, with temperatures edging up slightly, the CWA said, adding that Monday would be mostly sunny around Taiwan, aside from showers in the east.

After verifying the reports, the agency last month issued a notice requiring her to appear and explain her actions. Guan
The Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau audited six hotels in an effort to prevent price gouging ahead of Korean band BTS’ concert tour in the city scheduled for Nov. 19, 21 and 22 this year. These establishments included the local branches of Chateau de Chine, Hotel Nikko, My Humble House, and Grand Hai Lai, it said, adding that the Consumer Protection Commission would have penalized price gougers had the accusations been substantiated. The bureau said the Tourism Development Act

CWA forecaster Cheng Jie-ren (鄭傑仁) said the first tropical depression of this year is over waters east of the Philippines, about 1,867km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), and could strengthen into Tropical Storm Nokaen by early today. The system is moving slowly from northwest to north, and is expected to remain east of the Philippines with little chance of affecting Taiwan,
