A heavy rain alert was issued for parts of northern Taiwan today due to ongoing seasonal northeasterly winds and cloud cover moving in from southern China, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
A heavy rain advisory, indicating at least 80mm of rain in 24 hours or 40mm in one hour, has been issued for Keelung, Taipei and New Taipei City, and would stay in effect through tonight, the CWA said.

It warned of possible landslides in mountainous areas in these cities caused by heavy downpours.
Elsewhere, the CWA said the weather is expected to be stable with only brief showers possible in Taoyuan and Hsinchu and Miaoli counties in the north, Hualien County in the east and mountainous regions in central Taiwan.
Partly cloudy and sunny skies are expected to prevail in southern Taiwan despite occasional showers, the CWA said.
Due to the seasonal winds, northern Taiwan is expected to experience cooler weather today, with temperatures forecast to hit 19°C to 25°C during the day.
Daytime temperatures in central and southern Taiwan, where the seasonal winds would have less of an impact, are expected to range between 28°C and 31°C before falling to 21°C to 23°C at night, the CWA said.
Strong winds are expected in Keelung and northern coastal areas and Tainan and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) in the south, the CWA said.
The eye of the latest Western Pacific storm, Typhoon Kalmaegi, was 1,310km south-southeast of Cape Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan's southernmost point, as of 2am.
It is currently forecast to move through the central Philippines and then head toward the Spratly Islands and Vietnam, the CWA said, adding that it was unlikely to directly affect Taiwan.
Three Taiwanese airlines have prohibited passengers from packing Bluetooth earbuds and their charger cases in checked luggage. Foreign travelers entering Taiwan on a short layover via Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport are receiving NT$600 gift vouchers from yesterday, the Tourism Administration said, adding that it hopes the incentive would boost tourism consumption at the airport. Temperatures in northern Taiwan are forecast to reach as high as 30°C today, as an ongoing northeasterly seasonal wind system weakens, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng (曾昭誠) said yesterday that with the seasonal wind system weakening, warmer easterly winds would boost the temperature today.
