Prosecutors have requested the detention of Hsinchu City Council Deputy Speaker Yu Pang-yen (余邦彥) over corruption allegations after questioning him and conducting a search of his office and other locations yesterday.
Prosecutors requested the Hsinchu District Court to detain the Chinese Nationalist Party member on suspicion of contravening the Anti-Corruption Act (貪污治罪條例), as there is a risk that he could collude with others when the investigation is ongoing.
A detention hearing is to begin later today.

The case was suspected to be related to construction projects, people familiar with the matter said.
Prosecutors yesterday went to the Construction Management Office of Hsinchu City government’s Department of Urban Development to collect information concerning two soil and gravel resource stacking sites.
There are currently four legally registered soil and gravel resource stacking sites in Hsinchu, people familiar with the matter said.
The Hsinchu City government said it was not a search and that it was cooperating with investigators who came with official documents.
It was not allowed to provide further information based on the principle of non-disclosure of an investigation, it said.
The Hsinchu District Prosecutors’ Office also said it was not allowed to disclose further details of the case.
