The Legislative Yuan today passed a resolution to form a Constitutional Amendment Committee, which is to hold its first meeting later this month.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus said it would not raise any objections to the resolution before today’s vote.
Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) then announced that the resolution had been passed, and the composition of the committee would be in line with the proportion of legislative seats held by every political party.

The committee is to convene on Aug. 25, Han said.
The motion was proposed by the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), which had previously proposed the abolishment of the Control Yuan with the support of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT).
The TPP advanced the motion to its second reading in June.
At that time, the motion was opposed by the ruling DPP and a consensus was not reached during cross-party negotiations.
The TPP proposed amendments to the motion, which were put on the agenda of today’s session.
Legislators from different parties have proposed constitutional amendments that have been passed in plenary sessions, the TPP said.
However, due to the lack of the Constitutional Amendment Committee in this legislative term, there is a need to establish the committee so that the proposed amendments can be further discussed, the TPP said.
The committee should be formed according to the ratio of seats held by every party in the legislature, the TPP said.
The KMT should have 19 seats, the DPP should have 17 seats and the TPP should have three seats in the committee, the TPP said.
After the resolution was passed, TPP Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) proposed reconsidering the resolution.
No legislators voted in favor of the proposal, while 56 voted against it.
The bill is not to be reconsidered in the future if it is rejected by the legislature, as such a request can only be made once, according to the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Yuan (立法院議事規則).

Aftershocks from a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that struck off Yilan County at 3:45pm yesterday could reach a magnitude of 5 to 5.5, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Seismological Center technical officer Chiu Chun-ta (邱俊達) told a news conference that the epicenter of the temblor was more than 100km from Taiwan. Although predicted to measure between magnitude 5 and 5.5, the aftershocks would reach an intensity of 1 on Taiwan’s 7-tier scale, which gauges the actual effect of an earthquake, he said. The earthquake lasted longer in Taipei because the city is in a basin, he said. The quake’s epicenter was about 128.9km east-southeast

STAY VIGILANT: People should reduce the risk of chronic liver inflammation by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and eating pickled foods, the physician said A doctor last week urged people to look for five key warning signs of acute liver failure after popular producer-turned-entertainer Shen Yu-lin (沈玉琳) was reportedly admitted to an intensive care unit for fulminant hepatitis. Fulminant hepatitis is the rapid and massive death of liver cells, impairing the organ’s detoxification, metabolic, protein synthesis and bile production functions, which if left untreated has a mortality rate as high as 80 percent, according to the Web site of Advancing Clinical Treatment of Liver Disease, an international organization focused on liver disease prevention and treatment.
