Temperatures in New Taipei City’s Sindian District (新店) climbed past 37°C yesterday, as the Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued heat alerts for 16 municipalities, warning the public of intense heat expected across Taiwan.
The hottest location in Taiwan was in Sindian, where the mercury reached 37.5°C at about 2pm, according to CWA data.
Taipei’s Shilin District (士林) recorded a temperature of 37.4°C at noon, Taitung County’s Jinfeng Township (金峰) at 12:50 pm logged a temperature of 37.4°C and Miaoli County’s Toufen Township (頭份) reached 36.7°C at 11:40am, the CWA said.

The weather agency yesterday issued a yellow level information notice for Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Chiayi City, as well as Hsinchu, Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Pingtung, Hualien and Taitung counties.
A yellow notice is issued when the daily maximum temperature of a location reaches 36°C.
Certain areas in Taitung could even experience Foehn winds, a downslope wind pattern that is typically dry and warm, the CWA said.
Meanwhile, independent meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said that between today and tomorrow, Taiwan would see sunny weather with a chance of cloudiness.
Moisture would return, bringing instability to the atmosphere and localized showers or thundershowers after noon, with the possibility of heavy rain, he said.
From Wednesday to Tuesday next week, the nation would be hot and again see sunny to cloudy weather patterns, Wu said.
Brief showers or thundershowers could also manifest on mountainous areas after noon, with a high likelihood of spreading to low-lying areas near mountainous areas, he said.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The epicenter of the temblor was at sea, about 69.9km south of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 30.9km, it said. There were no immediate reports of damage resulting from the quake. The first tropical storm of the year in the western North Pacific, Wutip (蝴蝶), has formed over the South China Sea and is expected to move toward Hainan Island off southern China, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today. The agency said a tropical depression over waters near the Paracel and Zhongsha islands strengthened into a tropical storm this morning.
