Applications to take part in the nation’s first phytopathology examination, which is to take place in August, starts today, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
The Examination Yuan on April 15 established the Senior Professional and Technical Examinations Regulations for Plant Doctors (專門職業及技術人員高等考試植物診療師考試規則) following the promulgation of the Plant Doctor Act (植物診療師法) on Aug. 7 last year.
Registration for the exam runs from today until Thursday next week, with the test scheduled to be held from Aug. 15 to 17, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency said.

Applicants must be Republic of China citizens who have graduated and obtained a diploma from a public or registered private junior college or institution of higher education, or from a foreign junior college or institution of higher education recognized by the Ministry of Education, it said.
Their major must be in one of the following fields: plant medicine (and safe agriculture), plant protection, plant pests and diseases, entomology, plant pathology (and microbiology), agronomy, agricultural production, horticulture (and landscape or biotechnology), agricultural chemistry, soil (and environmental) science, forestry (including environmental and resource conservation, natural resources, conservation, resource management and resource technology), agricultural technology, or smart or quality agriculture, it agency said.
The examination consists of six subjects: plant disease diagnosis, identification and control; plant pest diagnosis, identification and control; plant physiology and diagnosis and treatment of physiological diseases; plant cultivation management and soil and fertilizer science; pesticide pharmacology and applications; and integrated management of plant pests, it said.
People who pass the examination would be accredited as professional plant doctors, who are qualified to conduct diagnosis of plant pests, diseases or cultivation difficulties in fields for agricultural workers to help enhance crop health management, it said.
They would also be qualified to assist the government in prompt monitoring and reporting of emerging plant epidemics to prevent agricultural epidemics and control food safety at the source, it added.
Plant doctors would be a crucial driving force for the sustainable development of agriculture, the agency said.
