A teenage cyclist struck by a vehicle yesterday in Changhua County remained in a coma this morning, although his condition had improved, doctors said.
The 15-year-old boy surnamed Yen (顏) was assessed to have the lowest GCS score of 3 when he was brought to Changhua Christian Hospital yesterday, indicating a deep coma.
After undergoing treatment overnight, his score had improved to an 8 out of 15, the high end of “severe” coma, hospital spokesperson Chang Shang-wen (張尚文) said.

Although his vital signs are now stable, he is still in the intensive care unit and “is not out of the woods yet,” Chang said.
As his condition has improved, his family has decided to transfer Yen to a hospital in northern Taiwan for further treatment, the hospital said.
Yen was on a round-island cycling trip with 27 other students from New Taipei City’s Kang Chiao International School when a sedan veered into the group from the other side of the road in Changhua’s Pitou Township (埤頭).
Seven students were injured, as well as the driver.
Eight Chinese naval vessels and 24 military aircraft were detected crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait between 6am yesterday and 6am today, the Ministry of National Defense said this morning. The aircraft entered Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern and eastern air defense identification zones, the ministry said. The armed forces responded with mission aircraft, naval vessels and shore-based missile systems to closely monitor the situation, it added.
