A relatively large earthquake may strike within the next two weeks, following a magnitude 5.2 temblor that shook Taitung County this morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
An earthquake struck at 8:18am today 10.2km west of Taitung County Hall in Taitung City at a relatively shallow depth of 6.5km, CWA data showed.
The largest intensity of 4 was felt in Taitung and Pingtung counties, which received an alert notice, while areas north of Taichung did not feel any shaking, the CWA said.

The earthquake was the result of the collision between the Philippine Plate and the Eurasian Plate, the agency said, adding that past data show a frequent occurrence of quakes measuring magnitude 5.2 or greater in the area.
As of 8:37am, there had been 118 felt aftershocks after a main quake of magnitude 6.4 that shook Chiayi County early on Tuesday morning last week, the CWA said.
Although they are gradually becoming less frequent, as the few regional quakes felt this morning were to the south of the main quake, the agency predicted there is a possibility of a larger quake striking within the next one to two weeks.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) today issued a "tsunami watch" alert after a magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia earlier in the morning. The quake struck off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula at 7:25am (Taiwan time) at a depth of about 19km, the CWA said, citing figures from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The Executive Yuan yesterday approved a southwestern extension of the Sanying MRT Line from New Taipei to Bade District (八德) in Taoyuan, with a goal of starting construction by late 2026.
