The Fair Trade Commission today rejected Uber Eats’ acquisition of Foodpanda’s Taiwan delivery service due to concerns about competition.
Uber Eats publicly announced its plan to acquire Foodpanda’s delivery service on May 14, drawing significant international attention.
Uber Eats submitted application materials to the commission for review on Nov. 8 last year.

If the two delivery services were to combine, the market concentration would increase and competition would be restricted, the commission said on Dec. 9, extending its review.
Uber was prepared to present additional commitments and conditions to the commission to achieve a win-win situation for Taiwan, the company said.
However, the commission decided that concerns about competition were too significant and announced its resolution to reject the merger today.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The epicenter of the temblor was at sea, about 69.9km south of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 30.9km, it said. There were no immediate reports of damage resulting from the quake. The Taipei MRT is to begin accepting mobile payment services in the fall, Taipei Rapid Transit Corp said on Saturday. When the company finishes the installation of new payment units at ticketing gates in October, MRT passengers can use credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, the operator said.
