The earliest time of arrival for typhoon-force winds in different areas is to be included in storm forecasting starting this year, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said on Wednesday.
The new advisory is to provide the public and local officials with a more accurate and earlier understanding of predicted typhoon conditions, CWA Administrator Cheng Chia-ping (程家平) told a news conference in Taipei.
As the winds experienced along the coast are stronger than in urban areas, the CWA is to provide detailed wind forecasts for coastal regions, he said.

In addition, sea conditions for far and near-shore areas would be announced five days in advance instead of the current three, and conditions for shorelines would be announced three days in advance from two, he said.
The agency would also provide advance warning of potential rip currents to ensure the safety of beachgoers, Cheng added.
Weather imaging resolution is also being upgraded this year, reducing the grid length for longer-range typhoon forecasting from 15km to 10km, and the smaller grid length for local forecasting from 3km to 2km, Cheng said.
The goal is to reduce the five-day margin of error for predicting the path of a typhoon from the current 321km to 267km, he added.
As for earthquake detection, the CWA has built 27 more seismic monitoring stations for a total of 594, and has improved transmission efficiency, reducing warning delay from 10 to 7 seconds, Cheng said.

Taiwanese should be mindful when visiting China, as Beijing in July is likely to tighten the implementation of policies on national security following the introduction of two regulations, a researcher said on Saturday. China on Friday unveiled the regulations governing the law enforcement and judicial activities of national security agencies. They would help crack down on “illegal” and “criminal” activities that Beijing considers to be endangering national security, according to reports by China’s state media. The definition of what constitutes a national security threat in China is vague, Taiwan Thinktank researcher Wu Se-chih (吳瑟致) said. The two procedural regulations are to provide Chinese
