Hakka lifetime contribution award recipient Chen Yun-tung (陳運棟) passed away Wednesday at the age of 91, the Hakka Affairs Council said in a press release Thursday.
Chen was devoted to the preservation of Hakka language and culture, and had published more than 40 books and 160 articles on the topics in his lifetime, the council said. Chen was widely considered as one of the most important pioneers in Hakka research, it said.

Born on Aug. 23, 1933 in Miaoli County's Toufen Township (頭份), Chen served as a primary-school teacher, a high-school teacher, an academic director, a principal, and a part-time lecturer at the Chinese Culture University.
He also served as a representative of the 2nd to 3rd National Assembly, and as chair of several associations, and has appeared on television hosting lectures on Hakka culture.
