Snake owners are advised to monitor their pets more closely, as more of them have been escaping in recent years, the New Taipei City Government said on World Snake Day yesterday.
The city’s Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office said that with more people in Taiwan keeping snakes as pets, the number of requests for the reptiles to be rescued has increased.
The office said it received 12 such requests in the first six months of the year, and in two cases, the pets were nonvenomous black king snakes that had escaped from their owners.

During those two rescue attempts, one of the black king snakes was found in a park in the city’s Sanchong District (三重), while the other was caught in an alley in Yonghe District (永和), it said.
Last year, the number of requests for pet snake rescues was 21, but in 2021 it was 13, the office said, urging snake owners to be more vigilant and to secure their pets properly.
Pet snakes require adequate space, temperature control, good ventilation and fresh water, the office said.
People who abandon their pets can be fined NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 under the Animal Protection Act (動物保護法), it said.
