Mandopop singer Yang Hsiao-ping (楊小萍) has died at the age of 79, her younger brother, Yang Ching-huang (楊慶煌), an actor, said through his agent on Tuesday. The veteran singer passed away on Monday with most of her family present, the agent said. “As far as I know she died of old age, there is no information about her being ill,” the agent said, adding that Yang Hsiao-ping had lived with them for the past few years. She did not provide any information as to where the singer lived at the time of her death. Yang Hsiao-ping was born in Shanghai in 1944. Her family moved to Changhua County when she was three. Yang Hsiao-ping was recruited as an actor in the air force’s recreation troupe when she was in junior high school and founded her own troupe when she was 20. She played roles in TV shows and films, gaining recognition for her renditions of popular classic songs such as Wine and Coffee in the 1960s.
