A project to build an overpass over the National Sun Yat-sen Freeway (National Freeway No. 1) has won the design category of the Global Road Achievement Awards, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications said yesterday.
Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications Tseng Dar-jen (曾大仁) accepted the award on behalf of the government, the designers and the builders of the project at the International Road Federation Europe and Central Asia Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, the ministry said.
The congress was held on Thursday and Friday and awards were presented in 12 categories to companies and organizations in recognition of innovative road projects.

The award-winning viaduct project runs for about 40km from New Taipei City’s (新北市) Wugu District (五股) to Taoyuan’s Yangmei District (楊梅). Work began in October 2009 and concluded in April 2013 and the project cost NT$88.2 billion (about US$2.7 billion at current exchange rates).
The project was aimed at resolving traffic congestion problems on the northern part of the freeway.
It faced numerous challenges, including limited construction space, maintaining traffic on a busy section of freeway and implementing a very complicated technical design in a short period of time, the federation said.
“The project is a testament of how the collective efforts of the government, designers and builders can realize a unique road engineering design solution,” it said.
