US news network CNN on Wednesday picked eight restaurants that it said serves the best beef noodles in Taipei, a city that it noted has an annual festival devoted to the dish.
“At beef noodle soup’s equivalent of Oscars night [the Taipei Beef Noodle Festival], awards are given for the city’s best traditional spicy broth and best clear broth soup,” CNN said in its review.
“It’s obvious — a bowl of beef noodles is the best way to dive into the Taipei experience,” it added.
At the top of CNN’s list of Taipei’s best beef noodle restaurants was the Regent Taipei hotel, whose “award-winning dish features beef slices alongside bird’s-nest fern, a crunchy and slightly bitter green from Taiwan’s mountains,” the network said.
In second place was Yong Kang Beef Noodle restaurant, a family-run business that serves “chewy noodles, tender Australian beef, gelatinous tendons and flavorful broth with a hint of star anise,” CNN said.
CNN picked a small, long-established eatery, Lin Dong Fan, as the third-best beef noodle joint in Taipei, saying that it is famed for its old-school recipe and “has been pleasing palates for three decades.”
Other restaurants in the review included Pin Chuan Lan, W Taipei hotel, Mien Mien Chu Tao Tasty Noodle House, Taiwan Yi Pin Ramen and Sliced Noodle, and Silks Palace at the New Palace Museum.
In response to the recognition, Regent Taipei said support for the nation’s beloved cuisine helps to preserve and improve the beef noodle culture.
“Hopefully, through the recommendations of media heavyweights like CNN, international travelers and local gourmet lovers will appreciate the chefs’ culinary skills and creativity,” Regent Taipei said.
