The seven-in-one elections are to be held on Nov. 29, the Central Election Commission announced yesterday, with polling stations open from 8am to 4pm.
Elections are to be held for all directly elected local government positions: the mayors and councilors of the special municipalities; county commissioners and councilors; city mayors and city councilors; township administrators and councilors; and borough village wardens.
President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), who doubles as chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), has recently urged the party to stand united and spare no efforts to achieve victory in the elections, while Democratic Progressive Party Chairman (DPP) Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) has insisted that this year’s polls are a more urgent task for his party than the 2016 presidential election.
The Taiwan Solidarity Union has said it would focus on winning city and county councilor seats instead of mayors or commissioners, while the People First Party said that it is ready to reinforce its local support base as it prepares for the polls.

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) caucus yesterday said it opposes the introduction of migrant workers from India until a mechanism is in place to prevent workers from absconding. Minister of Labor Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) on Thursday told the Legislative Yuan that the first group of migrant workers from India could be introduced as early as this year, as part of a government program.
