Control Yuan members yesterday questioned government officials over a scheme that saw state-owned CPC Corp, Taiwan (CPC, 台灣中油) overcharge consumers for gasoline-linked air pollution and gas fund fees over a number of years.
Control Yuan members said that CPC started charging customers higher air pollution and gas fund fees that it later submitted to the government after the refiner began implementing a floating price mechanism on gasoline and diesel fuel in September 2006.
A Control Yuan member, who wished to remain anonymous, said that Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang (施顏祥) said that the ministry would consider overhauling the mechanism, under which the CPC linked domestic fuel prices to benchmark prices of West Texas Intermediate crude oil trading in New York.
Between 2006 and 2008, there was “quite a large discrepancy” between the air pollution and gas fuel fees and the amount that CPC submitted to the Environment Protection Administration (EPA), Control Yuan member Hung Chao-nan (洪昭男) said yesterday, stopping short of saying how big the gap was.
The Executive Yuan yesterday approved a southwestern extension of the Sanying MRT Line from New Taipei to Bade District (八德) in Taoyuan, with a goal of starting construction by late 2026. The 4.03-kilometer extension, featuring three new stations, will run from the current terminus at Yingtao Fude Station (LB12) in New Taipei City to Dannan Station (LB14), where it will connect with Taoyuan’s Green Line, New Taipei City Metro Corp said in a statement. The Ministry of Culture yesterday officially launched the “We TAIWAN” cultural program on Osaka’s Nakanoshima sandbank, with the program’s mascot receiving overwhelming popularity.
