The National Police Agency (NPA) said yesterday that local police authorities were investigating two cases of violence that occurred on Saturday night as people celebrated election victories.
At about 10:15pm, Huwei Township (虎尾), Yunlin County, chief candidate Chen Chen-hui (陳振輝) of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), heavily inebriated and armed with a handgun, proceeded to campaign headquarters of his competitor Lin Wen-pin (林文彬).
Chen, who was believed to have a good chance of winning the township election, lost the to Lin, of the Democratic Progressive Party, by more than 2,600 votes.
When Chen arrived at Lin’s campaign headquarters, he found about 20 supporters celebrating the victory, Yunlin County Police Department chief officer Ho Ming-chou (何明洲) said.
The crowd panicked when they saw Chen was carrying a gun.
Lin’s son, Lin Wu-ping (林悟平) — a police officer — struggled with Chen and attempted to seize the gun, but during the battle a shot was fired, hitting Lin Wen-ping’s sister, Lin Li-ying (林麗瑛), in the left calf.
Lin Li-ying has received medical attention and her life was not in danger.
After arresting and questioning Chen, Yunlin District prosecutors yesterday charged him with attempted homicide.
Another incident occurred at the campaign headquarters of Miaoli County’s new county commissioner Liu Cheng-hung (劉政鴻).
The KMT candidate had been celebrating his victory when an unknown individual snatched a reporter’s backpack and ran away.
