The cream of Asian cinema gathered in Taipei last night for the 46th Golden Horse Awards, considered the Chinese-language equivalent of the Oscars.
Chinese actress Li Bingbing (李冰冰) was honored with the award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in The Message (風聲).
Best Leading Actor was shared by Cantonese actor Nick Cheung (張家輝) for his performance in The Beast Stalker (証人) and Chinese actor Huang Bo (黃渤) from the film Cow (鬥牛).
Meanwhile, Chinese actor Wang Xueqi (王學圻) was honored as the Best Supporting Actor for Forever Enthralled (梅蘭芳).
Hong Kong actress Wai Ying Hung (惠英紅) was announced winner of the Best Supporting Actress, honored for her role in the film At the End of Daybreak (心魔).
Among the movie luminaries attending the gala ceremony were famed Taiwanese directors Ang Lee (李安) and Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Leon Dai (戴立忍), their Hong Kong peers Johnnie To (杜琪峰), Stanley Kwan (關錦鵬) and actor Daniel Wu (吳彥祖) also of Hong Kong.
”The Award is an enormous encouragement to the actors and actresses,” Wai said after receiving the award at the ceremony held at the Taipei County Hall Building.
The Best New Performer award went to Chinese actor Yu Shaoqun (余少群) for the movie Forever Enthralled while the Best Cinematography award was given to City of Life and Death (南京!南京!)
The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Ming Ji (明驥) while George Wang (王玨) received the Special Contribution Award.
Dai’s No Pudeo Vivir Sin Ti (不能沒有你) won Best Original Screenplay.
The Best Feature Film and Best Director awards had not been announced at press time.
