Participants at a cross-strait academic forum on fish stocks called for the establishment of a mechanism to resolve cross-strait fisheries disputes and help fishermen operating in the Taiwan Strait.
Academics from National Taiwan Ocean University and researchers from China’s Fujian Marine Research Institute and the Kinmen Fisheries Research Institute also called for cooperation to ensure sustainable commercial fishing.
Liao Cheng-hsin (廖正信), director of university’s environmental biology and fisheries science department, said fisheries experts from Taiwan and China already maintain very close ties because they share the Strait as key fishing grounds.
Taiwan and China should go one step further and establish a mechanism to handle any disputes and protect fishermen, Liao said.
Huang Shifong (黃世峰), chairman of the Fujian Deep Sea Fisheries Association, said the fishery sectors from the two sides stood to learn from each other and complement each other by building closer ties.
Kinmen County Commissioner Lee Chu-feng (李炷烽) said Taiwan and China share responsibility for conserving resources in the Strait.
The Executive Yuan yesterday approved a southwestern extension of the Sanying MRT Line from New Taipei to Bade District (八德) in Taoyuan, with a goal of starting construction by late 2026. The 4.03-kilometer extension, featuring three new stations, will run from the current terminus at Yingtao Fude Station (LB12) in New Taipei City to Dannan Station (LB14), where it will connect with Taoyuan’s Green Line, New Taipei City Metro Corp said in a statement.
