More than 80 percent of elementary school students in Taipei eat breakfast every day, a survey released by the city’s Department of Education yesterday showed.
The high ratio of Taipei elementary school students who eat breakfast regularly could be seen as a testament to the success of the department’s efforts to ensure that the city’s students have a balanced and nutritious diet, it said.
The survey, which interviewed 22,760 students at 141 public elementary schools in the city, showed that 83 percent of Taipei schoolchildren ate breakfast daily, while 9 percent ate breakfast five or six days a week, and only 2.8 percent did not eat breakfast.
The most popular breakfast foods favored by students were toast or bread, which topped the list at 27 percent, followed by sandwiches at 16 percent, steamed stuffed buns at 15 percent, and rice porridge at 6.3 percent, the survey showed.
As for beverages, milk and milk products such as yogurt drinks were the most popular, followed by sugar-based drinks at 16 percent, and soybean milk or rice milk at 13 percent.
Students who did not eat breakfast cited a lack of appetite in the morning, no time to prepare a meal, dislike for breakfast food ingredients and a desire to lose weight as reasons, the survey showed.
The survey was conducted in March and April.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday reported the first case of a new COVID-19 subvariant — BA.3.2 — in a 10-year-old Singaporean girl who had a fever upon arrival in Taiwan and tested positive for the disease. South Korea is planning to revise its controversial electronic arrival card, a step Taiwanese officials said prompted them to hold off on planned retaliatory measures, a South Korean media report said yesterday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is suspending retaliation measures against South Korea that were set to take effect tomorrow, after Seoul said it is updating its e-arrival system, MOFA said today.
