A Mirage 2000-5 jet fighter pilot’s popping the question to his flight sergeant girlfriend became the highlight of an open-house activity at the Air Force Hsinchu Base yesterday.
“Will you marry me?” said Captain Liu Tung-yueh (劉東岳), kneeling down before his girlfriend in front of his Mirage.
Liu was on duty at the time as he was commissioned to introduce and answer questions from the public regarding his Mirage, which was displayed in front of the hanger. His girlfriend, Flight Sergeant Lin Yi-chun (林怡君), was off duty but was present to visit her boyfriend. In front of a group of photojournalists and visitors, Liu suddenly proposed to Lin, while the crowd chanted, “Take his flowers and marry him!”
“I was indeed surprised because I did not expect this. Yes, I will marry him,” Lin said.
The love birds are both serving the Air Force at the Hsinchu Base, which is also the home base for the nation’s Mirage jet fighters. The base organized an open-house activity yesterday to display the state-of-the-art jet fighters, including Mirages, F-16A Falcons and IDFs. Mirage and F-16 pilots also held an air show at the scene.
The Air Force then held a picnic at the base.
“We want to show the public what we are capable of and what kind of training we have been through. Also, we want to show our family members that they do not need to worry about their loved ones at the base because they are all taken care of,” the deputy spokesman for the base said.

A Philippine official has denied allegations of mistreatment of crew members during Philippine authorities’ boarding of a Taiwanese fishing vessel on Monday. Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) spokesman Nazario Briguera on Friday said that BFAR law enforcement officers “observed the proper boarding protocols” when they boarded the Taiwanese vessel Sheng Yu Feng (昇漁豐號) and towed it to Basco Port in the Philippines. Briguera’s comments came a day after the Taiwanese captain of the Sheng Yu Feng, Chen Tsung-tun (陳宗頓), held a news conference in Pingtung County and accused the Philippine authorities of mistreatment during the boarding of
