Public sentiment remains pessimistic in Taiwan, despite a slight increase in confidence in the country's politics and economy, according to the results of a survey released yesterday by the Global View monthly magazine.
The Taiwan Public Mood Index survey covers a political confidence index and an economic confidence index. If the index registers higher than 50 points, this indicates an optimistic or positive view. If the index registers lower than 50 points, this indicates a pessimistic or negative view.
According to the survey, the public mood index stands at 34.5 this month, with the political confidence index rising 0.3 points over the previous month to 36.6 and the economic confidence index gaining 0.9 points to 32.4.
While the confidence index for the government stands at 36.1, up 0.9 points from last month, the political optimism index is 37.3, down 0.8 points from last month.

Meanwhile, the confidence index for the economic status quo stands at 27.7, up 2.1 points over last month, and the economic optimism index stands at 37.1, down 0.3 points.
The survey was conducted from Sept. 13 to Sept. 14 on 1,008 adults around Taiwan. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
