Taiwanese senior high school students won three gold and three silver medals in the International Mathematics Olympiad held in Athens earlier this month.
These six medals marked the best achievement by the Tai-wanese team to date. At previous Olympiads the best performance included three gold, two silver and one bronze medal. In this year's competition, every Taiwanese contestant was awarded at least a silver medal.
Taiwan has been sending senior high school students to the competition since 1991. Students from 85 countries participated in this year's competition, held from July 8 to July 16, which marked the 45th anniversary of the annual event.
The Taiwanese team was led by Tso Tai-cheng (左太政), a professor in the department of mathematics at National Kaohsiung Normal University. Two of the students who received gold medals, Huang Tao-sheng (黃道生) and Tsai Hsin-yu (趙心宇), both graduated from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School. Huang and Tsai plan to start their studies in the department of electrical engineering at National Taiwan University this fall.
The other gold medalist is Tsai Cheng-chiang (

"Tsai was already taking part in many math competitions while he was in junior high. Since he has done so well in mathematics, he has been granted the privilege of being left alone while other students are attending math classes," Pan said.
Although Tsai is only a first-year senior high school student, he is already attending mathematics classes at National Sun Yat-sen University.
The International Mathematics Olympiad consists of a paper of six problems, where the topics are selected from various areas of secondary-school mathematics.

Taiwan is to have nine extended holidays next year, led by a nine-day Lunar New Year break, the Cabinet announced yesterday. The nine-day Lunar New Year holiday next year matches the length of this year’s holiday, which featured six extended holidays. The increase in extended holidays is due to the Act on the Implementation of Commemorative and Festival Holidays (紀念日及節日實施條例), which was passed early last month with support from the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party. Under the new act, the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve is also a national holiday, and Labor Day would no longer be limited

While Apple has set the goal of using 100 percent renewable energy across its entire business, supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030, carbon emissions from electronics manufacturing are rising globally due to increased energy consumption, it said. Given that carbon emissions from its supply chain accounted for more than half of its total emissions last year, Greenpeace East Asia evaluated the green transition performance of Apple’s five largest final
