The Floriade is the world horticultural exhibition in the Netherlands. The Floriade is held once every ten years -- the event in 2002 will be the fifth. Floriade 2002 will run from April 6 until October 20 in the district of Haarlemmermeer, close to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and tourist centers like Amsterdam and Haarlem. Floriade 2002 is expected to attract three million people from all over the world.
The greatest horticultural show of the decade Floriade 2002 showcases every aspect of Dutch horticulture. From vegetables and fruit to mushrooms, from bulbs, flowers and plants to trees, bushes and shrubs. National and international exhibitors will create more than 300 truly exceptional displays and presentations in the 65-hectare park, among them a fantastic valley of flowers, filled with more than a million flower bulbs in the spring, and followed from May/June onwards by colorful annuals and perennials. The visitor will be able to take a romantic world trip through national entries from Asia, Africa, America and Europe. There will also be some 40 changing indoor exhibits that require a sheltered environment with a controlled climate. These exhibitions cover a range of themes, including bulbs, shrubs, glasshouse vegetables and tropical plants.
The greatest horticultural show of the decade in the Netherlands is a paradise for gardeners, with several rose gardens, a water lily pond and a glorious valley of bulbs. The Green City focuses on the latest green trends in, on and around the house. The fabulous colors and wonderful scents in the park reach their high point in the Valley of the Senses -- a veritable feast for the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
The ultimate landmark at Floriade 2002 is the sculpture on top of Big Spotters' Hill. The view from this spot is phenomenal. At the foot of the forty-meter high sand pyramid lie ten islands that house presentations on the theme of sustainability. Go on a time trip through the magical world of water or take a look at the very heart of the earth.
The bright yellow of the Roof, the largest solar array of its kind in the world, can be seen from miles around. On the south side of the park there is a wood with a lake in its center. Twenty international gardens nestle at the water's edge. They are amazingly diverse, ranging from an authentic Thai pavilion and a traditional Japanese garden to a modern French presentation. Different wherever you look, and yet always recognizable: Floriade 2002, the greatest garden in the Netherlands!
