CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel yesterday died as a result of injuries he sustained in a sickening collision with FC Andorra’s goalkeeper in a Spanish second division match.
“Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe this is real, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death, at 8am, of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” his club said in a statement. “No words can ease the pain, nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness. Our thoughts are with the family, his close friends and Tenerife fans, who today are grieving over this terrible news.”

The incident happened toward the end of the match, which was tied at 2-2. Owono was sent off, and the match was subsequently abandoned.
Spanish media said that De Miguel had a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated, with Tenerife later saying the player’s condition had “worsened neurologically,” before his death.
De Miguel had been at Tenerife for just more than a season, having joined in the summer of last year from CD Castellon.
“I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesus,” former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, Andorra’s majority shareholder, wrote on social media.
Andorra also sent their “most sincere condolences” to De Miguel’s family, teammates and Tenerife.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and other clubs in Spain also sent messages of condolence, as well as the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
“Shattered by this sad news, the Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to express our deepest sorrow at his passing today,” it said in a statement.
Real Madrid yesterday apologized to China for star striker Kylian Mbappe’s comments poking fun at Mao Zedong, after the star striker’s remarks sparked a social media storm and saw Spanish soccer yanked off state TV. Mocking former leader Mao — blamed by historians for millions of deaths — is taboo in China, and Mbappe’s remarks saw him become the latest foreign sports figure to anger Beijing. In a clip of a video interview with French show The Bridge — since taken down — Mbappe talked about being amused by an Internet meme of his face photoshopped onto “some guy, think he’s a

The Boston Red Sox traded Cheng to Detroit on Thursday, a transaction log on the MLB Web site showed. The Red Sox received cash considerations in return, US media reported. Cheng would join infielder Lee Hao-yu of Taiwan on the Tigers roster, but while Lee established himself as a legitimate major league hitter this year, Cheng still has to prove himself. The 25-year-old made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh
The pounding of shoes echoed through a Singapore shopping mall as runners desperate to train take refuge from choking haze. Smoke from wildfires in neighboring Indonesia has sent air quality in the city-state plummeting to its worst levels in more than a decade in the past few weeks, canceling outdoor activities. Those seeking exercise, including runners training for international events, have found an unconventional alternative: air-conditioned shopping malls. On Saturday, more than 80 runners turned the corridors of the Marina Square shopping center into makeshift running tracks, clocking laps past storefronts on two floors before shops opened for business. There are strict rules. “No sprinting,
Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, who won European gold and competed at two Olympic Games, has died aged 34, her family announced on Sunday. “At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” said a statement posted on the athlete’s Instagram account. Mageean’s death comes just weeks after she married her long-term boyfriend in Belfast. She had been receiving treatment for bowel cancer, revealing her diagnosis in July last year and subsequently disclosing that the disease was at an advanced stage. Originally from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean established herself as one
