At least one person died and 47 more were injured on Friday night in an unspecified “incident” at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Peru’s capital during a rally ahead of a soccer derby, the Peruvian Ministry of Health said.
“There has been an unfortunate incident at the stadium in which 47 people have been injured ... and sadly there is one fatality,” Peruvian Minister of Health Juan Carlos Velasco told reporters, without providing details on the cause.
Media reported that there was a “flag-waving event” at the stadium at the time of the incident.

The incident was initially attributed to the collapse of a part of a stadium wall, but the Alianza Lima team later wrote on X that it was not caused by “the fall of walls or structural failures of the sports complex.”
“We are fully and transparently collaborating with the competent authorities,” the club said, vowing “total transparency” in helping to clarify the facts of the incident.
Alianza Lima ruled out any structural failures at the stadium, as did a fire official.
Velasco said that 39 of the people who were hurt were sent to hospitals throughout the Lima region, including three in critical condition.
Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo told reporters that “the structure of the southern stands appeared to be in good condition.”
“There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit,” he added.
The Liga 1 match between top-of-the-table Alianza Peru and fourth-placed Club Universitario de Deportes at the nearby Estadio Monumental “U” was set to proceed as planned this morning Taiwan time, the Peruvian soccer league said in a statement.

Greek swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev was the only athlete to “beat” a world record on Sunday at the Enhanced Games, winning the men’s 50m freestyle at the divisive competition where athletes were free to take performance-enhancing substances. His time of 20.81 seconds — which is not considered official — came in the final event of the night in Las Vegas, sparing the blushes of organizers who made claims that multiple world records would be surpassed due to a sophisticated doping regime. Gkolomeev, who was wearing a synthetic “supersuit” long banned at events such as the Olympics, outpaced Australia’s Cameron McEvoy’s 20.88 set in
