Inter on Sunday stayed at the Serie A summit after beating Atalanta BC 1-0 to maintain their slender lead over local rivals AC Milan.
Lautaro Martinez netted the only goal of the game in Bergamo for Inter, who lead Milan, 3-0 winners against Hellas Verona thanks to Christoper Nkunku’s first Serie A goals, by a single point at the top of the division.
The Argentina striker has scored in four consecutive league matches to end what has been a tricky year in positive style.

“I ended last season in a lot of pain... I kept going during the Club World Cup and international duty, and I had a very short summer break,” said Martinez, who scored 15 Serie A goals over the calendar year.
Martinez’s league-leading ninth goal of the campaign decided an engaging match which could have gone either way, with both teams having chances to break the deadlock before Martinez pounced.
Marcus Thuram and Charles de Ketelaere had goals ruled out for offside for each side, while Nicolo Barella wasted a great chance to score for Inter just after Luis Henrique was denied by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, but once Martinez rifled home with his left, after Berat Djimsiti sloppily gave away possession just outside his own penalty area, Atalanta had an uphill task to stop a second home defeat of the season.
It was an encouraging performance from Atalanta, who have been a different team since Raffaele Palladino replaced Ivan Juric last month, but they sit 10th, five points away from the European positions.
Atalanta would have come away with a point had Lazar Samardzic not fallen over his own feet when presented with a glorious opportunity to level by De Ketelaere with three minutes remaining.
Earlier at the San Siro, Nkunku doubled Milan’s lead two minutes after halftime with a penalty he had earned, ending a league drought stretching back to February when he was playing for Chelsea in England.
Five minutes later he tapped home the third to ensure the hosts extended their unbeaten league run to 15 matches.
The 28-year-old’s only previous goal for Milan since signing from Chelsea for an initial 37 million euros (US$43.6 million) in August came against US Lecce in the Coppa Italia in September.
Milan were sent on their way to a comprehensive victory on the stroke of halftime by Christian Pulisic, who continued his sensational form by scoring his eighth goal in 11 Serie A appearances.
Pulisic, who has lost about a month of this season to injury, has played a part in 50 goals in Serie A since arriving at Milan in 2023. Verona, who had won their past two matches against Atalanta and ACF Fiorentina, stay in the relegation zone, two points behind Genoa, who sit just outside the bottom three.
Rasmus Hojlund took his all-competitions goal tally for SSC Napoli to nine as the champions cruised to a 2-0 win at US Cremonese and stayed two points behind Inter in third.
Fresh from winning the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia, Napoli were the better team from the first whistle and were deservedly ahead in the 13th minute when Hojlund pounced on a deflection to net from close range.
Hojlund was again in the right place at the right time seconds before halftime when Alessio Zerbin could only divert Matteo Politano’s cross straight to the Denmark striker, who calmly poked home.
Hojlund has scored six times in 12 Serie A appearances, two more than he managed in an entire English Premier League campaign with Manchester United last season.
“I’m getting better every season,” said Hojlund, who played in Italy for Atalanta before United. “Obviously when I was at Atalanta I was a bit younger and I’ve got a bit more experience now. I’ve played in the Premier League and in the Champions League, and I’m playing with very good players now.”
Bologna are seventh and without a win in four league matches after being held to a 1-1 draw by US Sassuolo.
Fenerbahce on Thursday earned a rare 2-1 win in England, but were still knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by Nottingham Forest in the playoffs. Forest entered the second leg with a healthy 3-0 lead from the opener in Istanbul — where Vitor Pereira made an impact in his first game in charge — and that proved enough to advance to the round-of-16 with a 4-2 aggregate score. The result was a boost for Forest, struggling at 17th place in the Premier League, in their return to Europe after three decades. They next face Real Betis Balompie or Kerem Akturkoglu gave Fenerbahce

Aprilia’s Bezzecchi led from start to finish to top the podium in Buriram, with KTM’s Pedro Acosta second and Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez third. Ducati’s Marquez is chasing a record-equaling eighth world title this season, but he exited the race in dramatic fashion while in fourth place with five laps to go. The Spaniard, who started from second on the grid, took a corner wide, with the jolt to his bike dislodging the rear tire, badly damaging his
EVERY DAY A VICTORY: Players on the women’s team faced pressure from society just getting out onto the field as they prepare for their first Women’s Asian Cup game today Bangladesh’s national soccer team face daunting odds at their first-ever Women’s Asian Cup, but have already scored a major victory by qualifying. In the South Asian nation of 170 million, social stigma, family expectations, poverty and religious hardliners have long relegated women and girls to sports sidelines. The first women’s soccer league matches took place in 2011 and the squad, known to fans as the Red and Green, have kept pressing forward despite deeply embedded prejudices. “Many more girls would have joined us if the community had been even slightly supportive,” captain Afeida Khandaker told AFP ahead of her side’s March 3
