Taiwanese weightlifter Hong Zi-yu on Friday clinched three silver medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in the women’s 45kg category in Jiangshan, China.
Hong lifted 73kg in the snatch and 88kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 161kg, earning silver in all three disciplines.
After missing her first snatch attempt at 70kg, she succeeded on her second try and then completed a 73kg lift on her third.

In the clean and jerk, she opened with a successful 85kg lift, followed by 88kg on her second attempt. She then attempted 98kg in a bid to break Taiwan’s national total weight record, but was unsuccessful.
Hong was second only to world record holder Zhao Jinhong of China, who set a new Asian and world record with a 90kg snatch and snagged two more golds with a 100kg clean and jerk and a total lift of 190kg.
In the women’s 49kg category, Taiwan’s Lin Cheng-jing achieved a personal best 85kg snatch, finishing fourth overall. She also placed fourth in the clean and jerk, and had a total lift of 185kg.
Among the five competitors in the 49kg category, Taiwanese lifter Fang Wan-ling, who competed in the Paris Olympics last year, placed fifth.
Hampered by injuries, she managed a 75kg snatch and a 95kg clean and jerk for a total of 170kg.
The Asian Weightlifting Championships this year runs from Friday to Thursday.
