The TSG Hawks on Friday ended a three-game skid and secured their first win of the season in their home opener, defeating the Rakuten Monkeys 4-3 in a walk-off win after Jhang Jhao-yuan’s two-RBI single.
Two outs away from their fourth straight loss, the Hawks strung together three consecutive hits to turn the game at Chengching Lake Stadium in Kaohsiung.
After Wang Po-jung singled off Monkeys closer Chen Bo-hao, Steven Moya — the CPBL’s top home-run hitter last season — ripped a double down the right-field line, putting two runners in scoring position for Jhang.

Behind in the count 2-2, Jhang connected on a 145kph fastball, sending a grounder past shortstop Ma Chieh-sen, who was shallow and could not make the stop.
Wang and Moya scored, sealing the walk-off victory.
Jhang, who had gone hitless in his first three at-bats, said that he was nervous stepping into the box, afraid he might fail to bring the runners home.

“I calmed myself down when I thought about how I had veteran teammates like Wu Nien-ting behind me,” the third-year catcher said. “So I just went up there and swung aggressively.”
That swing earned him the game’s Most Valuable Player award in front of 15,487 fans.
The win also gave relief to Hawks manager Hung I-chung, who avoided his first 0-4 start since taking the reins in 2004.

Hung is the only manager to record 1,000 wins in the CPBL’s 36-year history.
Monkeys starter Jonathan Bermudez allowed one run — a homer by Moya in the second — over 5-2/3 innings, while Hawks starter Bradin Hagens, who played for the Monkeys from 2021 to 2023, gave up two earned runs in six innings.
Lin Shi-xiang picked up the win after keeping the Monkeys off the board in the ninth. Chen took the loss, giving up two earned runs in the final frame.
The Monkeys dropped to 0-3 and remained the only CPBL team without a win this season.
They failed again last night to score their first victory, losing 4-2 in game 2 of the three-game series.
In the other results yesterday, with the games finishing just before press time last night, the Wei Chuan Dragons trounced the Fubon Guardians 11-3 at Taipei Tianmu Stadium, while the CTBC Brothers won 4-3 in 10 innings against the Uni-President Lions at Taichung Intercontinental Stadium.
When Paddy Dwyer arrived in China in 1976, crowds jostled to catch a glimpse of him and his companions — the first Western soccer team to play in the country. China was emerging from the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, and on the brink of market reforms that would take the country from economic stagnation to explosive growth. “All we could see was lines of people running beside our bus, trying to look in the windows, to see their first visual of a white person,” he said. “It was all bicycles,” he said. “There were very few cars to be seen.” Dwyer,
Jannik Sinner continued his quest to become the first man in history to win five Masters 1000 tournaments in a row with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Danish qualifier Elmer Moller at the Madrid Open on Sunday. The world leader extended his winning streak to 19 matches, a run that began early March in Indian Wells, and he has captured 24 consecutive victories at the Masters 1000 level, dating back to the Paris Masters last October. Searching for a maiden title at this level on clay, Sinner advanced to the round of 16 at the Caja Magica with a 77-minute performance against
Tennis players are facing an unexpected opponent at the Madrid Open. A stomach virus or food poisoning has affected Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Marin Cilic and others, raising concerns. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka avoided an upset by Naomi Osaka on the court on Monday and said she is trying to avoid illness by sticking to a diet of chicken breasts, rice and salad. The rumor among the players was bad shrimp tacos were to blame. Sabalenka knocked on wood for luck and said, “So far, so good. I heard that I have to avoid those tacos,” she laughed, adding “I stick to the
Some of Clearlake Capital Group’s largest investors are growing increasingly concerned about how much time the company’s co-founders are spending on sports investments as they have struggled to complete the fundraising for the private equity firm’s latest flagship fund. One of Clearlake’s co-founders, Behdad Eghbali, has been spending what some investors described as a disproportionate amount of time on the firm’s investment in Chelsea Football Club in recent months. Now, co-founder Jose E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones, are nearing a record US$3.9 billion deal to acquire the San Diego Padres. That personal investment by Feliciano has set off the latest
