A 54-year-old Nepalese climber known as “Everest Man” yesterday reached the peak of the world’s highest mountain for a record 30th time, three decades after his first summit.
Kami Rita Sherpa, who broke his own record after climbing the 8,849m peak for the 29th time earlier this month, has previously said that he was “just working” and did not plan on setting records.
“Kami Rita reached the summit this morning. Now he has made a new record with 30 summits of Everest,” said Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, his expedition organizer.

Kami Rita Sherpa first stood on the top of Everest in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition.
Since then he has climbed Everest almost every year, guiding clients.
“I am glad for the record, but records are eventually broken,” he said after his 29th climb on May 12. “I am more happy that my climbs help Nepal be recognized in the world.”
Last year, Kami Rita Sherpa climbed Everest twice to reclaim his record after another guide, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, equaled his number of ascents.
He has also conquered other 8,000m peaks including the world’s second-highest mountain, K2 in Pakistan.
His summit yesterday came as the season’s death toll climbed to five.
A Romanian climber died during a bid to scale Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain, his expedition organizer said.
“He was found dead in his tent on Camp Three on Monday morning by his guide,” said Mohan Lamsal of Makalu Adventure, naming the climber as Gabriel Viorel Tabara.
Earlier this week, two Mongolian climbers went missing and were later found dead after reaching Everest’s summit.
Chinese soccer fans have poured their love — and money — into a Singaporean goalkeeper’s food stall after his performance in a game this week indirectly helped China advance to the third qualifying round for the FIFA World Cup in 2026. Hassan Sunny, a 40-year-old goalkeeper on the national team, became an overnight celebrity on Chinese social media after Singapore’s 3-1 loss to Thailand on Tuesday. China would have been eliminated if Thailand had won by three goals. Sunny made enough saves to prevent that from happening. Chinese fans have been lining up and buying out all the food at the stand
China squeezed into the third round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a 1-0 defeat at South Korea on Tuesday, with Indonesia also progressing on a night of drama. Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in scored just after the hour in Seoul for South Korea, who were already into the next qualifying phase as group winners. The damaging loss left China’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread, but Thailand failed to take advantage as their dreams of progressing fell agonizingly short. They needed to beat basement side Singapore by three goals in Bangkok to leapfrog China into second place in
GOLDEN BOY: With Italy’s president watching, Tamberi was given a standing ovation when he walked onto the track, and he did not disappoint, jumping a record 2.37m Norway’s Karsten Warholm on Tuesday fired out a broadside at Olympic contenders in the run-in to the Paris Games by winning a third successive European Athletics Championships title in Rome as a galaxy of global stars showcased some scintillating form. Warholm, the Olympic champion and a three-time world gold medalist, timed 46.98 seconds for the victory. “I felt strong and I was in control,” Warholm said. “Now it’s back to training and keep on pushing.” “This is a good step on the road, but this is more to build confidence and get the gold medal. In Paris I’ll try to be as sharp
Poland’s Nicola Zalewski on Monday scored a 90th-minute goal to snatch a 2-1 win over Turkey in the final warm-up match for both sides before Euro 2024, but the hosts will be worried over injuries to strikers Karol Swiderski and Robert Lewandowski. Swiderski opened the scoring in the 12th minute, slipping his shot under the legs of goalkeeper Mert Gunok, but as the forward celebrated he came down awkwardly on his ankle and went off injured shortly afterward. “Karol has sprained his ankle and only after the tests will we know what the situation looks like. There will certainly be no changes
