Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane hopes that Tuesday’s 3-0 win over SS Lazio, which secured progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, would be a “turning point” in the club’s season.
Bayern went into Tuesday’s match having won just one of five games, a run that included losing the first leg 1-0 in Rome and also caused them to fall 10 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
The run cost manager Thomas Tuchel his job, with the club and coach issuing a statement saying that he would end his contract early in the summer.

Kane, who has scored at a remarkable rate despite Bayern’s struggles, notched a brace in the win and now has 33 goals in 32 games in all competitions since joining Bayern in the summer last year.
Speaking to reporters after the victory while holding the man-of-the-match trophy and a schnitzel burger, Kane said he hoped it was “a turning point for the rest of the year.”
“If we perform like that in most games, we’re going to come out with a victory. It was a pleasing day,” the England international said. “It’s been a good season so far in terms of the goals, but as a team we know we can do better.”
“I’m trying to help that situation, the team are trying to help that situation, and I hope we can use this as a turning point to push on in the Bundesliga and see if we can put pressure on Leverkusen — and see who we can get in the next round of the Champions League,” he said.
Tuchel told Amazon Prime that he had injured himself during his pre-match motivational speech.
“I don’t know if the players know about it, they might have wondered why I sat for 90 minutes, but that’s why,” he said.
“We’ve got very big goals and the minimum goal for all of us is the quarter-final,” Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2020-2021, told reporters.
Bayern veteran Thomas Mueller said qualifying for the last eight was “not salvation ... but a very important step” for the under-fire club.
The 34-year-old, who has at times called out his side’s struggles, told Amazon Prime the win showed the season was not over for the German champions.
“I’ve said it before — it’s not a complete shambles here, we’re sticking together off the pitch, we’ve just had a few footballing problems on it,” he said. “We know how important it was to progress today.”
Baseball star Shohei Ohtani has stunningly revealed he’s married. Ohtani wrote on Thursday on Instagram in Japanese: “The season is approaching but I would like to announce to everyone that I have gotten married.” He said his new wife was a “Japanese woman” without identifying her. He said he would reveal more in an interview; presumably at the Los Angeles Dodgers spring training venue. The 29-year-old Ohtani is Japan’s biggest celebrity, and there has always been curiosity around his personal life, which he has always kept very private. His focus, and his image, has always been 100%-baseball focused — free of scandals or
Rafael Nadal on Sunday said that one good thing about nearing the end of his career is that he would not have to face Carlos Alcaraz too many times after the 37-year-old Spaniard lost to his compatriot in an exhibition match in Las Vegas. Nadal, who has won 22 Grand Slam titles, added that the future of Spanish tennis was in good hands with the 20-year-old. Alcaraz has already won major titles at the US Open and Wimbledon, and is ranked No. 2 in the world behind Novak Djokovic. “It’s a good thing that as a player I will not face him many
ONE OF A KIND: The feat might never be touched by another player, with Nikola Jokic having to average 25 points over his next 1,057 appearances to match James’ record LeBron James on Saturday reached 40,000 points, still going strong in his 21st NBA season as he tries to put the career scoring record out of reach. James drove past Michael Porter Jr and hit a layup with 10 minutes, 39 seconds left in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 124-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets for the historic basket. “Being the first player to do something, it’s pretty cool in this league, just knowing the history, the greats that’s come through the league, and then you see some of the greats on the floor tonight, it was great to
The Manly Sea Eagles and Sydney Roosters on Saturday made winning starts as Australia’s National Rugby League launched its season at glitzy Las Vegas in a bold bid to break into the lucrative US market. Rugby league is hugely popular in Australia and the sport’s bosses have long wanted to grow its presence in the US. A double-header to start the season was the sport’s first serious foray into the country after signing a five-year deal to play 10 matches at Allegiant Stadium, which hosted the Super Bowl three weeks ago. Manly beat the South Sydney Rabbitohs — co-owned by Hollywood star Russell
