Taiwan’s only active MLB player has been designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, leaving his professional future uncertain.
The Red Sox on Tuesday said in a statement that they were reinstating shortstop Trevor Story from their 60-day injured list and had designated Yu Chang (張育成)for assignment to create an opening for Story on its 40-man roster.
Under MLB rules, one a player is designated for assignment, teams must, within seven days, either return the player to the 40-man roster, place the player on a waiver, trade the player, release the player or outright the player from the 40-man roster to the minor leagues.

Chang signed a one-year US$850,000 contract with the Red Sox in February after appearing in 11 games for the club last season, but he fractured his left wrist in late April.
He was out of action until early last month. In 33 games, he hit only .162 (17 for 105) with a .200 on-base percentage, two doubles, six home runs and 18 RBIs.
