Mikaela Shiffrin on Saturday became the most successful racer in the history of FIS Alpine Ski World Cup skiing as she won for the 87th time with victory in the slalom at Are, Sweden.
“It’s pretty hard to comprehend that thought,” said Shiffrin after sealing the victory that lifts her ahead of the legendary Swede Ingemar Stenmark, whose record of 86 victories she equaled 24 hours earlier by winning the giant slalom at the same venue.
“My brother and sister-in-law got here. I didn’t know they were coming so that makes it so special,” Shiffrin said.

Two days shy of her 28th birthday, the American finished 0.92 seconds ahead of second-placed Wendy Holdener to secure her 13th World Cup win of the season at the Swedish ski station where, fittingly, she had opened her World Cup account back in 2012 as a 17-year-old.
Are also happens to be Stenmark’s home turf.
“She is so impressive, she’s awesome,” Stenmark said by telephone on Saturday. “It’s great for her, fantastic, and especially since she beat the record in Are where she won her first World Cup race.”
After a blistering opening run, she led Sweden’s Anna Swenn Larsson by 0.69 seconds at the halfway stage , with Holdener of Switzerland third at 0.94 seconds.
Another Swede, Cornelia Oehland, was quickest on the second run, but Shiffrin had enough of a cushion to ease to a convincing and comfortable record-breaking victory.
“The best feeling is to ski on the second run when ... you have a lead,” Shiffrin said. “You have to be smart, but also I just wanted to be fast, too, and ski the second run like its own race, and I did it exactly how I wanted and that’s amazing.”
Shiffrin secured her fifth overall crystal globe last weekend.
By a quirky coincidence, Saturday’s record-breaking win comes 12 years to the day after Shiffrin, two days short of her 16th birthday, made her World Cup debut in the giant slalom at Spindleruv Mlyn in the Czech Republic.
Since then she has clocked up 87 wins from 245 starts.
Like Shiffrin, Stenmark relished the slalom and giant slalom, dominating the two disciplines from 1975 before retiring in 1989.
However, while the Swede won all his World Cups in slalom and giant slalom, Shiffrin has developed into a skier for all disciplines with her World Cup haul comprising 53 wins in slalom, 20 in giant slalom, five in super-G, three in downhill, five in parallel slalom and one combined.
The Taiwan Daredevils yesterday won one and lost one in the Taiwan Premier League, dispatching TCA with ease, but stumbling against Formosa. In the morning match at the Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District (松山), the Daredevils’ Johan Koekemoer carried his side to 141-6 with 44 from 45 in their 20 overs. George Klopper’s right-arm spin dominated in the run chase. He claimed 4-5 from 3.3 overs as TCA slumped to 77 all out. The highlight of the innings was a stunning catch at cover as Jeff Black turned back the years to pull in a full-blooded drive on the dive

Alexander Zverev on Wednesday reached his 18th ATP Masters semi-final in Rome, but only after a worrying fall which sparked memories of the horror injury he had at the French Open two years ago. The world No. 5 from Germany defeated Taylor Fritz of the US 6-4, 6-3 in Italian Open to set up a last-four duel with Alejandro Tabilo, the Chilean journeyman who had stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament. Zverev’s moment of concern came in just the third game on center court at the Foro Italico when he fell on the clay and landed on his
Andre de Grasse, the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s 200m, and many other top-class international athletes are to showcase their talent in Taipei at the Taiwan Athletics Open early next month, according to the event’s official Web site. The Canadian sprinter, who clocked 19.62 seconds to top the podium in Tokyo in 2021, is to compete at the Taipei Stadium after the two-day event was upgraded to a leg of the World Athletics Continental Tour. The elevated status of the Taiwan Athletics Open means participants can earn more ranking points, making it possible for the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association (CTAA), the
