Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored twice on Sunday as Liverpool shrugged off a season of frustration to thrash Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield.
Juergen Klopp’s men set a new record margin of victory in the clash between England’s two most successful clubs.
“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. Everybody saw what the boys can be,” Klopp said. “The second half couldn’t start better. From that moment on we were flying and it was really difficult to play against us.”

Just a second defeat in 23 games in all competitions realistically ends United’s hopes of a first Premier League title in a decade as they remain 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal in third place, but there could be even more lasting damage from a record-equaling defeat for the club in a competitive game and the heaviest since 1931.
“The result is quite obvious. It is unprofessional,” United manager Erik ten Hag said. “There are many things which make me angry. To concede so easy the goals is definitely one.”
Liverpool closed to within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.
Klopp’s side won the two league meetings between the teams by an aggregate score of 9-0 last season, but the tables had seemingly turned this season. A 2-1 win over Liverpool in August last year gave Ten Hag his first win as United boss and his team started the day 10 points clear of their rivals.
Liverpool had looked a shadow of the side that came close to an unprecedented quadruple of trophies last season, but either side of a 5-2 humiliation on home soil by Real Madrid, they have got back in the race for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season thanks to a run of 13 points from a possible 15 in the Premier League.
“Everybody has to feel us. Everybody has to know we are still around,” Klopp said. “That’s what we have to be from now on.”
Ten Hag told his players to embrace the hostile environment of Anfield, where United have not won since 2016, but they crumbled after Gakpo opened the floodgates two minutes before halftime.
Andy Robertson sliced open the United defense to play in the Netherlands international, who cut inside and fired low into the far corner.
Ten Hag’s men were then blown away in the second half as Liverpool’s new-look front three finally clicked.
Nunez punished sloppy United defending as the Uruguayan stooped to head in Harvey Elliott’s cross.
Moments later, Gakpo scored his second with a delightful dink over David de Gea at the end of a lightning Liverpool counterattack.
Salah got the goal his performance deserved as he crashed in Nunez’s through-ball off the underside of the bar.
Nunez then headed in his second as he was left completely unmarked from Jordan Henderson’s cross.
Salah became Liverpool’s outright all-time Premier League goalscorer with 129 with a simple tap-in after more shambolic United defending.
“It’s very special, I can’t lie,” Salah said. “This record was in my mind since I came here. After my first season I was always chasing the record.”
Roberto Firmino is to move on at the end of the season it was revealed on Friday last week, but the Brazilian came off the bench to have the final say as he slotted a remarkable seventh goal two minutes from time.
Earlier on Sunday, Brennan Johnson struck twice to earn Nottingham Forest a vital 2-2 draw against fellow strugglers Everton in the battle for Premier League survival.
Steve Cooper’s side trailed to Demarai Gray’s early penalty at the City Ground before Johnson popped up with the equalizer.
Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton back in front, but Johnson rescued Forest when he netted again late in the second half.
Forest are unbeaten in their past nine league home games and sit four points clear of the relegation zone, while Everton are third-bottom, below Leeds United on goal-difference, as they fight to avoid playing in the second tier for the first time since 1954.
Freddie Freeman homered and drove in four runs, Shohei Ohtani also went deep and Roki Sasaki earned his first major league win as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday night for their seventh straight victory. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series to improve to 5-0 against Atlanta this year. Los Angeles’ three-game sweep at home early in the season left the Braves 0-7. Sasaki allowed three runs and six hits over five innings. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up a home run to Ozzie Albies, but received plenty of offensive support in his
INTER AWAIT: Superb saves by PSG ’keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inspired the victory, as Arsenal were punished for misses, including one by Bukayo Saka Arsenal on Wednesday fell short on the big stage again as their painful UEFA Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain left Mikel Arteta to rue his club’s failure to provide him with enough attacking options. Arteta’s side were unable to reach the Champions League final for the first time in 19 years as PSG clinched a tense 2-1 win at Parc des Princes. Trailing 1-0 from last week’s first leg in London, the Gunners made a blistering start to the second leg, but could not convert their chances as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s superb saves inspired PSG’s 3-1 aggregate victory. Arsenal were punished for
Bayern Munich on Sunday were crowned German champions for the 34th time, giving striker Harry Kane his first major trophy, after second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 at SC Freiburg. Bayern’s 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday, when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, meant defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen needed to win at Freiburg to delay the title party. Leverkusen were two goals down before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes, but Xabi Alonso’s side could not find a third, as Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt after
THRILLER: Raphinha gave Barca a 3-2 lead with two minutes remaining of regular time, but Francesco Acerbi equalized the game in the second minute of added time Davide Frattesi on Tuesday fired Inter into the UEFA Champions League final with an extra-time winner that gave the Italians a stunning 4-3 triumph over Barcelona, 7-6 on aggregate. Italy midfielder Frattesi won a tie for the ages under a downpour in Milan when he lashed home in the 99th minute, sending a packed and rocking San Siro wild with joy. Simone Inzaghi’s team will face either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this month in Munich, Germany, where they would feel they have a great chance to be crowned kings of Europe for a fourth time after
